Defying Gravity: Breaking Free and Embracing Sovereignty
When I first watched Wicked the musical years ago, I don’t think I truly listened. Sure, the spectacle was dazzling, and the songs were memorable, but it didn’t hit me where it mattered most—inside. Fast forward to today, after watching the first part of Wicked, the movie, I found myself profoundly moved, as if a spell had finally been broken.
And then there’s Defying Gravity. This isn’t just a song; it’s a moment—a declaration of sovereignty and self-realization. Elphaba, misunderstood and underestimated, stands in her power for the first time. She sheds her chains, both seen and unseen, and takes flight.
This moment in the story isn’t just about rebellion; it’s about stepping into her own magical, mystical being. Watching her, I couldn’t help but see it as a metaphor for real life.
We all live within systems that shape how we see ourselves and the world—family, culture, societal expectations. They can serve as guideposts but often feel like walls. The “powers that be” in Wicked reminded me of the forces in our own world that thrive on control, keeping us small, fearful, and compliant.
Breaking free of these systems is no small feat. It’s not just about rejecting what no longer serves us; it’s about rediscovering who we are. In my work as an energy worker, I’ve seen it again and again—the moment someone realizes they are so much more than what they’ve been told.
Defying Gravity is a rallying cry for that realization. It’s a reminder that we are all sovereign beings, capable of stepping out of the matrix and into our full, magical selves.
What struck me most about Elphaba’s moment wasn’t just her defiance—it was her courage. To defy gravity, she had to trust herself completely. She had to believe that her power, misunderstood and vilified by others, was worth embracing.
It’s a powerful metaphor for self-awareness. When we step into our sovereignty, it often feels like we’re stepping off a cliff, unsure if we’ll fly or fall. But as Elphaba shows us, when we trust in our power, the sky is the limit.
For me, Defying Gravity speaks directly to the heart of self-awareness and sovereignty. It’s about owning who you are, reclaiming your power, and refusing to play by the rules of a game you never agreed to.
In my journey and the journeys of those I work with, I’ve learned that sovereignty isn’t about isolation—it’s about connection. To your truth, your power, and your magic. And when you embrace that, you don’t just change your life—you inspire others to do the same.
So here’s my invitation to you: What’s your Defying Gravity moment? What’s the leap you’re ready to take?
Because once you take that step, there’s no going back—and that’s the beauty of it. You’ll find that you’ve had wings all along.
